Wayne Sherwood Obituary

Wayne L Sherwood, 83, of Greene passed away October 1, 2022 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY.  Wayne was born December 22, 1937 to the late Donald & Mary Sherwood. He is also predeceased by his brother, Donald Sherwood Jr. and Don’s wife, Philomena Sherwood. He is survived by his partner, Pam Coviello; former wife, Pamela Bullett (Larry) Bowman; brother, David (Marlene) Sherwood; children, Todd (Teresa) Sherwood and Kelly (Mark) Jensen; grandchildren, Tyler (Chelsea) Sherwood, Shane Sherwood, Danielle (Brett) Tsupros and Carter Jensen; great grandchildren, Eloise Sherwood and Gabriel Abbott; nieces and nephews, Suzie (Tim) Borchardt, Stan (Jackie) Sherwood, Steven (Christine) Sherwood, Judy (Charlie) Smith, Michael (Lisa) Sherwood and Dana Deliman. Growing up the youngest of three brothers in Smithville Flats, Wayne attended Greene schools and graduated in 1955. All three of the Sherwood brothers served their country: Donnie in the Navy, David in the Army in the Airborne division, and Wayne in the Army Airborne Special Forces division. Wayne then continued to become a Green Beret, Ranger tabbed. After serving his country, Wayne began his family with Pamela (Bullett), having a son, Todd, and a daughter, Kelly. He earned an AS in electrical engineering at Broome Tech and BS in engineering technology from SUNY Binghamton. Wayne worked for New York State Electric & Gas for 26 years. Wayne began the next chapter of his life with Pam Coviello and her sons, Derek and Garth. They enjoyed skiing (with Kelly too), canoeing, golfing, bee keeping and traveling New York State to hockey and baseball tournaments. Wayne enjoyed most any social activity whether deer hunting, bowling with the guys or flying to northern Canadian wilderness for the more challenging canoe trips. When he turned 40, Wayne discovered golf and continued this passion until the end. In his down time, he also enjoyed watching baseball. It meant a lot to support his children and grandchildren to reach their goals of graduating college. He always tried to give back and support veterans. Perhaps Wayne’s most recognizable trait throughout his life was his handsome auburn red hair and very full beard. The grandkids thought they had their own Santa Claus. He will be remembered and missed by many for his extremely generous and social nature. Friends of the family may call 5:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, October 7 at Root Funeral Home, 23 N Chenango St, Greene, NY 13778. A burial service will be held 2:00PM November 5, 2022 at Genegantslet Cemetery in Greene. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a cause that supports our veterans.
