Steven D. McMullen (a.k.a. Mac), a quiet servant of the Lord, passed away on April 19, 2026 at Wilson Hospital. He was born on January 26, 1947. Steve was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Don and Ruth McMullen; grandparents, and several cousins. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Becky, of 54 years; Jud and Claudia McMullen and their children Steven and Alessandra of Plantation, Florida; Jarod and Erin McMullen and their children Alex and Aubrey of Chenango Forks, New York; and Jordan McMullen and his children Jordan and Pablo of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Steve is also survived by his brother Dean and his wife Sherrie of Hudson, Florida; and his sister Cheryl and her husband Gary Gajdorus and their two sons Ben and Phil of Binghamton, NY.
Steve was “One of a Kind!” He was a passionate family man whose grandchildren were the apples of his eye. He somehow always found a way to give 100% to his family, his students, whether teaching or substituting, and athletic endeavors (playing or coaching).
Mr. McMullen was a well-respected teacher and mentor to his fourth-grade students for 32 years. He was well-known for “Fun Fridays” and worked hard to make learning fun. He always encouraged his students to “make the right choice,” and had them on the edge of their seats with the embellished stories he told.
Steve was “The Ultimate Competitor!” in sports. His #1 sport was baseball starting early in youth programs of Little League and Babe Ruth and won MVP honors in both. He played for Sidney High School where he excelled on the pitcher’s mound, including a SUS title win in 1964, and a stellar senior season earning Steve a spot on the Central New York All-Star Team. He played 4 years at Oneonta State, with accolades of All-SUNYAC. The highlight of his senior year was pitching both ends of a double-header being routed in the first, coming back to win the second game. In 1969, Steve signed as a reliever with the Oneonta Yankees which won the NY-PENN league. His baseball career also included playing for the Milford MACs, Bainbridge Braves, and several special years playing for the Greene town team, where he made life-long friendships. His career culminated in softball leagues.
In 1999, Steve was honored to be inducted into the Oneonta State Baseball Hall of Fame, and was most recently inducted into the Sidney Sports Hall of Fame.
Steve was a coach for Greene’s varsity baseball team, varsity girls basketball, and girls and boys varsity tennis. He also coached his sons’ Little League and refereed boys and girls basketball.
