Shirley Barton Obituary

Shirley S. Barton of Greene, New York, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. She was born on December 31, 1933, in Norwich, New York, to her parents, the late Kenneth Scholefield and Marjorie Day.

Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Louis D. Barton; her brother, Clifford Scholefield; and her sister, Marilyn Villante. She is survived by her loving children: David Barton (Laurie), Steven Barton (Melody), Philip Barton (Sharon), and Cheryl Plahanski (Randy Kocher). Shirley was a proud grandmother to 10 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandmother to 15 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored.

Shirley graduated from Greene Central School and later attended Ridley Lowell Business School in Binghamton. Early in her career, she worked for the Chenango Forks School District. Shirley and Louie began their family in 1958, and she devoted many years to raising their four children, always putting her family first. Later in life, Shirley joined the family business as the cook at Maple Hill Golf Course, where she was known not only for her cooking but also for being one of the best joke tellers around. Shirley was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Greene for 76 years and most recently served as a Deacon. She was also a Charter member of the Greene Lionettes (1975 -1991). Shirley had a deep love for knitting, especially creating hand-knit afghans. Over the years, she lovingly knitted and gifted more than 500 afghans to family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Fairview for their care and kindness for Shirley’s time there. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
