Richard VanderBunt Obituary

Richard Anthony VanderBunt, "Dick", 89 of Greene, NY passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 30, 2024 with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony C. and Victoria J. (Lund) VanderBunt;  his brother, Gerald A. VanderBunt; his sisters, Vivian M., Lora L. (Richard) Sterling, Carol A. Turtura and son-in-law, Richard H. Plage. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara A. (Powers); daughters, Deborah L. (Richard) Thomas and Judy L. Plage both of Greene; 2 grandsons, James C. (Lacey) Thomas of Gilbert, AZ, Michael A. Thomas of Greene; 2 great granddaughters, Madelyn P. and Jillian I. both of Gilbert, AZ and by several nieces and nephews. Dick was born in Greene, NY on May 30, 1935.  He attended Greene School through 11th grade and moved to Oxford and graduated with the class of 1952.  They were a very close class and met for luncheons annually. In 1965 his father brought him a Ski-Doo to take for a ride which began his lifelong love of snowmobiling.  He taught his 2 grandsons, Jim and Mike how to ride and he continued to ride with his "buddies" into his 80's.  He was a charter member of the Greene Drift Riders and the Smithville Nite Owls snowmobile clubs.  He was so proud to have been honored as the oldest member by the snowmobile clubs in 2017, at the Norwich Parade of Lights for his dedication and promotion of the sport.  He was also a member of the committee that helped implement the NY State snowmobile trail system. He was an honorary member of Lake Ludlow where he enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Dick retired from IBEW Local 1249 in 1998.  After retirement, they traveled through 47 states and several countries. Dick and Barb were trustees of White Store Church and Evergreen Cemetery for 20 years. At Dick's request, there will be no calling hours and a private graveside service will be held.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greene Emergency Squad or the White Store Church and Evergreen Cemetery, 431 White Store Road, Norwich NY 13815.
