Norman Bauer Obituary

Norman Bauer of Greene, NY passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 26, 2024 from complications of his more than four year remarkable battle with cholangiocarcinoma.  He passed peacefully in the comfort of his home with Diane, his wife of more than 43 years, by his side. On August 6, 1936 he was born to Norman P. and Florence M (McGuire) Bauer and raised on their farm in Callicoon, NY.  He graduated from Broome Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and continued his studies in Electrical Engineering.  Except for a brief stint at Link Aviation, he spent his entire career at The Raymond Corporation in Greene. Norm held several positions  over his 40 years with the company, but the time he enjoyed the most was when he was the senior product safety and test engineer.  He finished as a product engineer of the Swing Reach. Never one to sit still, he was an asset to his community through his volunteer work.  He spent many years in the fire department and the emergency squad where he became one of the first EMTs.  Norm taught CPR to many and could be found in the squad tent during the Labor Day Picnic. He coached Little League, Little League All Stars, and Softball.  Above all else, his family was the center of his life.  He was proud of the accomplishments of his children and adored his grandchildren.  He never missed an opportunity to boast of their achievements. His life was full of sporting events, school concerts, plays, dance recitals, and anything else the kids could get into. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Lyman and Jerome. His father-in-law, John W. Arnold also went before him. He is survived by the love of his life, Diane with whom he raised two daughters, Dr. Kelsey Harvey and her husband, Scott Harvey and their son, Wesley; and Dr. Valorie VanGiesen Titus and her husband, Scott VanGiesen and their children, Keziah and Wiley. A brother, Ronald, also survives as do two favorite nephews and their children, Norman and Heidi with children, Dylan and Abigail for whom he was a surrogate grandpa; and Scott and Lindsay with children, Caleb and Piper. There are several more nieces and nephews that will also feel his loss. Norm is also survived by his mother-in-law, Gloria Arnold who he helped care for over the years. Also surviving are his eldest children and their children: Chris (Mitch) Anderson: Emma, Michael, and Katie; Ian (Thomas) O’Mara: Patti (Colin) Bleak, Tristan and Tennison. The family would like to thank all the friends that helped care for him in his final days.  They also extend their thanks to Guthrie Oncology staff and doctors, especially Dr. Talamo, Kelby, Cindy, Sonia, and his special nurse buddy Amy.  Also Dr. Achakzai from IR.  They all gave him more than four bonus years. If anyone wishes to memorialize him, please consider donations to the Greene Fire Department, Guthrie Cancer Center, or any children’s organization. A celebration of life will be held for Norm on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at the Greene Fire Station, 8 North Canal Street in Greene.  We will be gathering on what would have been his 88th birthday to honor him. Friends of the family may call from 4:00pm until 5:00pm followed by an honoring of his service by the Greene Fire Department.  A service will follow, given by Pastor Curtis.  At the conclusion, the family would like to extend an invitation to those who wish to join us in a celebration of his life. If you have a special memory of him that you would care to share, they ask that you bring your written memorial so that they might be included in a tribute book in his honor. Arrangements are under the direction of Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St, Greene, NY 13778 and condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com.
