Mary E. Laing

Mary E. Laing, 87, formerly of Greene, was delivered safely into the arms of Jesus Christ her Saviour on March 1, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; parents, Norris and Ruth Smith, and her siblings, Dawn Odinek, Lois Herold, and Douglas Smith. She is survived by her children, Robert (Sharon) Laing, Tamela (Mark) Norman and Roger (Shelly) Laing; her grandchildren, Robert II (Jessica), John, Shari (Jesse), Abigail (Samuel), Micah (Lianna), Joanna (Joshua), Josiah (Katlyn), Amber, Ashley (Matthew), Alisha, and AJ (Valeria); great-grandchildren, Grace, Gabriella, Titus, Alice, Théoden, Jonas, Silas, and Trace; brother, Hugh (Donna) Smith; sister-in-law, Carol Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary was born on April 24, 1937 in Cortland, NY. She graduated from Marathon Central School in 1955. She worked in Hillcrest at the Wyoming Conference Children’s Home before marrying Robert Laing in 1958. Mary’s life completely changed in November 1967 when she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour. Mary lovingly owned and operated Precious Jewels Daycare on Monell Street in Greene for many years using the money in the early days to provide her children with a Christian education. She truly cherished all of her “Jewels” and would speak of them often. She served as a Sunday School teacher and Cradle Roll Superintendent for numerous years at the Greene C&MA Church.  Mary enjoyed getting to know the people around Greene as she rode her bike or walked around town. She loved attending the yearly concert of Handel’s Messiah in Binghamton with friends. A celebration of Mary’s life will take place on March 15, 2025 at 10:00am at Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St, Greene, NY 13778. There will be a luncheon following the service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Greene Emergency Squad, 30 Birdsall St, Greene, NY 13778.
