Martha W. Rogers

Martha W. Rogers, 94 of Greene, passed away in her sleep at the NYS Veterans’ Home in Oxford on Sunday, January 3, 2020. Martha was predeceased by her husband, Philip M. Rogers; parents, George and Ruth Wooster; brother, Stub; son, Kerry E. Rogers and daughter, Wendy M. Rogers. She leaves behind her daughters and sons-in-law, Kim (Ralph) Burdick and Mindy (Wayne) Eldred; grandchildren, Robert Burdick, Edward Burdick, Elizabeth (Ryan) Bowker, Wayne (Rachel) Eldred II, Toby (Chelsea) Eldred, Abbie Rogers, Sarah Mata and Rev. Philip M. Rogers; great grandchildren, Owen Bowker, Hope Bowker, Kyle Eldred, Shuntay Eldred, Leland Eldred, Emerson Eldred, Beckett Eldred, Jordan Rogers, Jazmyne Mata and Zayden Bush. Martha was born September 18, 1926 and grew up on Chapin Street in Binghamton with her parents and brother.  She married Philip M. Rogers and raised their 4 children in Smithville Flats. She was very active in the Art Club, Garden Club, DAR and the Smithville Historical Society. She loved to do genealogy and traced her family line back to the Mayflower and the Huguenots. She worked at Greene Central School as an art teacher for many years and the Smithville Flats Post Office. She loved to read an entire book in one day. When her eyes started going, she would read short jokebooks and magazines. You could always find her with a magazine in her lap on her way to the library while at the NYS Veterans’ Home where she lived for the last 14 years. Our many thanks to all of the staff at the NYS Veterans’ Home for their wonderful care over the years; you have become her friends and family. Private services are under the direction of Root Funeral Home, 23 North Chenango Street, Greene, New York 13778 and condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring and announced at a later date.
