Marilyn Michelet Obituary

Marilyn Alice Michelet, 85, of Greene, passed away on February 19, 2024. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Michelet; and parents, John and Margaret Heigl. Marilyn graduated from Colby College and worked as an executive secretary and medical transcriptionist. She married Robert Michelet in 1969.  They lived and raised their children, Charles and Stephanie, in Maplewood, NJ before relocating to Los Altos, CA in the late 1980s. Always up for an adventure, she and her husband, Bob, spent several years in Hong Kong before settling in West River, MD. After her husband passed in 2011, she moved to Greene and lived with her sister, Claire. Claire became her caregiver during these final years. Marilyn was an avid reader and was rarely without a book in her hand. A skilled sewist and knitter, she created many handmade items for herself and her family. She also loved listening to music and dancing; some of her favorite artists were Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond and Willie Nelson. She was well travelled and visited many places in the US and abroad including France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, China, Singapore and Japan. Every summer the family would drive to Cherry Valley, NY to visit her parents’ farmhouse in the blue VW “bumpity” Bus.  To entertain the children, Marilyn would bring tapes of movie soundtracks like Mary Poppins, Jazz Singer and Popeye and she’d read Raggedy Ann and Andy books to Stephanie. Many of her close friends and relatives will recall her gregarious nature and dry wit and quick humor. She loved to throw fun holiday and birthday parties ranging from Fourth of July and Memorial Day festivities, that seemed to include the entire neighborhood, to Family Christmas and Thanksgiving meals. Birthday parties were especially fun and she seemed to get as much enjoyment as the kids Trick or Treating for Charles’ birthday or hiring magicians for Stephanie. Marilyn generously volunteered much of her time at her children’s school and the church. In particular, she was very involved with the South Orange, NJ parish of Our Lady of Sorrows where she typeset and helped publish the Church Newsletter for many years. We would like to thank Claire Gibbons for her selfless care and devotion to her sister; making sure that she felt safe and loved during her last years. We would also like to thank all of the neighbors, helpers and aides that worked alongside and assisted Claire to make Marilyn as comfortable as possible. Especially: Faith and Ivan King, Emma and Omer King, Cadence Purdy, Elisabeth Rutler, Mariruth Hitt-Kim, Esther King, Barbara Stolzfus, Carrie Callahan, and Alys Gratzel. Marilyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles Michelet and Ellen Horne; daughter, Stephanie Michelet; grandchildren, Anya, Maxine, Cáel and Eulalie; siblings, Paul Heigl, John Heigl, Claire Gibbons, Elaine Papazoglou and Ralph Heigl. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00am Saturday, February 24 at Immaculate Conception Church, 1180 NY-206, Greene, NY 13778.
