John Wynn Obituary

John E. Wynn, 79, of Greene NY passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  John was predeceased by his father, Thomas J. Wynn, his mother, Mary L. Wynn, his brothers Thomas H. Wynn and Richard R. Wynn.  John is survived by his son, Jonah Wynn of Colorado, and his beloved wife, Kris of Greene NY.  He is also survived by his brother, James Wynn of Galway NY; sister, Mary ( Maggie) Schmidt of West Charlton, NY, his sister, Ann Wynn Treiber of Fuquay, NC, and many nephews, nieces, extended family members, and supportive loving friends.

John graduated from Greene Central School in 1964 and his search for knowledge landed him in a variety of Colleges and Universities across the country, learning as much as he possibly could from whoever and whatever he could.  His reading list was part of this quest and was extensive, particularly books about history.

John was a passionate man who thrived in the great outdoors and carried a boundless love for his fellow humans. This passion of the outdoors led him to the mountains of Colorado. Vail Valley became his home for many years where he had a wealth of careers.  These included being an Executive Manager of the Bully III-Kiandra Lodge, a partner in a ground transportation company for skiers and other travelers, and a partner behind the oars of a white water rafting company.  John also helped to pioneer the high mountain 4x4 adventure tours industry in Vail Valley. This included introducing night vision with these tours and rafting adventures.  As a legendary entertainer and being a well versed commanding guide, he truly introduced countless populations of people to the beauty and excitement of the Rocky Mountain natural world.

John’s community commitment to the Valley included being a volunteer firefighter with the Gypsum Colorado Fire and Rescue District from 1998 to 2005.  His involvement led him to spearhead the introduction of the Swift Water Rescue program to this wide ranged valley.  This program is still in operation as an important aspect of river safety.

Returning to his hometown, Greene NY, in 2017, John became a member of the Greene Lions Club. After learning about and being involved in many projects, he eventually served as a past president. He was Vice District Governor of District 20-Y at the time of his death.
