Joan Marie (Silvernail) Armstrong, 91, of Chenango Forks, passed away December 24th, 2021, Christmas Eve, her favorite day of the year. This was when she brought her extended family together for Christmas Eve celebrations. Now we will always be together with her that very special day. Joan was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend, Dick in 2018 after 65 years of marriage; parents, Raymond and Clara Silvernail; in-laws, Joseph and Mary Armstrong; brothers in-law, Barrie Sweet, Edward Dewar and Joseph Armstrong Jr. and recently sister, Carol Dewar. She is survived by sisters, Jane Rae Sweet and Nancy Paige; brother in-law, Bill Armstrong. Joan is also survived by her children whom she committed her life to: Rick (Karen), Dan (girlfriend Chris), Tom (Andrea) and daughter, Pat. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Rick, Kelly, Kirk, Traci, Tommy and Katherine; 11 great and 2 great-great grandchildren in addition to nieces, nephews and special friends. She was a part of 5 living generations. Joan was a 1949 graduate of Johnson City High School and a 1953 graduate of the Wilson Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in a hospital, dental office, at Tuttle’s Medical Lab and provided part time clerical assistance at St. Rita's Church in Chenango Forks and Hawk Engineering in her later years. Her primary mission in life was dedication to family. Joan was also always prepared to help a neighbor in need. On Wednesday mornings for decades she had her friends and neighbors over for coffee and conversation. She loved to quilt, knit and crochet providing many beautiful items to her family and others over the years. The family wishes to thank those medical professionals who helped her with her health struggles in her final years, months and weeks. They include Dr. Heather Rattenbury-Shaw, Wilson Hospital South Tower 5, Lourdes Hospital Seton 2 and Vestal Park Nursing Home. The family cannot praise or thank enough Reasons, Home of Open Hearts, a family type home for seniors with needs. They provided her a home for the past 2 years giving her a sense of belonging and purpose while meeting her desire to be independent where possible/practical and providing all of life's needs to her and other residents. The family will receive friends, relatives and acquaintances from 9:00 am until 10:00 am Friday December 31st at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1049 Chenango Street, Binghamton NY 13901. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am. The Church and Dioceses of Syracuse require face masks in the church. Burial will be at a later date.
