Janice L. Vermaat

Janice Lee Vermaat, 88, of Greene passed away on February 3, 2025 after a long and difficult battle with Dementia. She was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Jane Haveman; sisters, Mary Joe and Linda; brother, Tom; son, Timothy; and grandson, Peter. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Peter; daughter, Susan Mueller (Paul); sons, David (Wendy), Joel (Robin), and James; daughter-in-law, Leslie; ten grandchildren; six (soon to be seven) great-grandchildren; sister, Susan Kruyf (Gerald); and brother, Fred Haveman. Jan worked for 14 years as a corrections officer for the Broome County Sheriff's Dept, until an accident ended her career there. She later worked as an optometrist’s assistant for both Dr’s. Lange and Viglucci in Greene. Music was the inspiration of her life; she played the organ at Valley Church for over 40 years and spent part of every day at the piano playing her favorite hymns. She loved flowers and beautiful things, and her home reflected that. She enjoyed cooking and reading; if she wasn’t in the kitchen, you could always find her sitting in the sunroom in her favorite chair, engrossed in her latest book. Later in life she also discovered the enjoyment of painting with watercolors. Her greatest joy was her family; she cherished every minute spent with them, and family gatherings were the happiest occasions in her life. The family wants to express our gratitude to all the staff on South Three at Willow Point Nursing Home for all they did to make life easier during the last difficult months of Jan’s life. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life for Janice will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, May 3 at the Valley Church, 1452 River Road, Binghamton, NY 13901 across from the Chenango Forks Elementary School. Friends may visit the family from 9:30am until the time of service at the church. A light luncheon will follow and all are invited.
