Gilda Smith Obituary

Gilda Ilene Kirby-Smith 73, of Avon Park, FL passed away on Thursday, July 1, 2021. She was predeceased by her parents, Kaska and Beatrice Kirby and sisters, Glenda Kirby-Crouch and Gayle Kirby-Packer. Gilda is survived by her brothers, Kermit Kirby and Kelby Kirby; sister, Gia Kirby; her sons, Stephen Smith (Gabrielle) and Brian Smith (Alicia) along with 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Gilda was born in Binghamton, NY and grew up in Chenango Forks, NY.  She always loved music, and displayed an amazing talent that had her performing at Carnegie Hall at the young age of 13.  Music would become her lifelong passion, and she would continue playing for the remainder of her life; but Gilda had many talents: while raising her two boys as a single mother, Gilda worked as a bookkeeper, driver and server.  Gilda spent 15 years working at the iconic Sharkey’s Bar and Grill in Binghamton, NY.  Gilda spent most of her life in the Binghamton, NY area, finally settling in Avon Park, Florida in 2014. Gilda often sacrificed for her family; she was a loving sister and devoted mother. She lived life on her terms and was fiercely loyal to friends and those she loved.  Gilda always tried to have a $20.00 bill on hand for any one in need and was famous for her “lucky dollars” and unrelenting belief that she would win the lottery one day.  Gilda always saw the good in everyone, and was quick to forgive, always available to lend a hand, and uniquely herself in everything she did.  She will be missed by many and forgotten by none. A graveside service will be held at Glen Castle Cemetery, 413 Castle Creek Rd, Binghamton, NY 13901 on Friday, August 13, 2021 at 10:00 AM.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com.
