George Marr Obituary

George Maharadze Marr, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 12, 2024. Born in Manhattan on December 15, 1935, he was the son of Ivan and Tatiana (Meyendorf) Marr.  He graduated from Northport High School, after which he attended Colorado State to study forestry but his love of the sea drew him to the U.S. Navy where he eventually was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1960, with a degree in engineering.  He served on the U.S.S. Wilkinson and U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt and in the Naval Research Lab before resigning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1968. He joined Scott Paper, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  and eventually moved to New York State for a facilities engineering position at Singer Link Aviation in Binghamton in 1976.  In 1992 he joined Binghamton University within the physical facilities department where he enjoyed designing and upgrading buildings on campus. He retired from Binghamton University in 2010 and then pursued a consulting career, later serving as an electrical inspector for the Southern Tier, up until April 2024.

George and Peg wed on June 26, 1960. They raised 3 children together and were fortunate to celebrate 64 years of marriage. George was an avid volunteer who dedicated significant time to his communities. He was president of his JayCee chapter in Pennsylvania and was elected  J.C.I Senator. In Greene,  he passionately served on the Zoning and Planning Boards. He was instrumental in the rebuilding of the First Congregational Church as the head of the Building Committee after the church fire of 1985. He was a member of American Legion Post 692 in Greene and the Greene Historical Society. He enjoyed sailing, music, technological discovery and designing cards and brochures for church and community events.  Always eager to hear a story or two, George was quiet and easygoing, with a passion for helping those around him.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peg"; son, Michael (Dawn); daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Burgess (Colin); daughter, Mary Jane "Janie" Fitzgerald (Dan); 3 grandchildren, Matthew Oderkirk, Allan Burgess, Jack Burgess and 2 great-grandchildren, Noah Oderkirk and Georgia Marie Burgess.  He is also survived by his brother, Ilarion Marr (Margaret) and his nieces, Ketevan Marr and Sophia Mushinski (Matthias) and nephew, Nicholas Marr (Bonnie).
