Fred Getz, Beloved Family Man and Esteemed Business Leader, Passes Away at 74
With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Frederick K. Getz, who left us peacefully on March 4, 2025, at the age of 74. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and respected business leader, Fred’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to family, career, and community.
Born on October 19, 1950, in Binghamton, NY, Fred was the cherished son of Karl Larue Getz and Constance Louise Brown. He was predeceased by his wife, Marcia Matiss, and his parents. He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law: Boyd and Kelly Getz of Michigan, Andrew and Erika Getz of Michigan, and Daniel and Margaret Getz of Illinois. Fred’s legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Juniper, Lionel, Amelia, Scarlett, and Henry. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerome (Dagmar) Getz and Norman Getz, as well as his nieces, Rebecca and Jennifer.
In his later years, Fred found love again and was recently engaged to Nancy Janecki. Nancy, along with her daughter Roxanne Janecki and son-in-law Marc Hocking, and her son Nickolas Janecki, provided Fred with love and care throughout his final days.
Fred was a graduate of Vestal High School (1968) and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1972. He later pursued an MBA in Accounting and Finance from the University of Cincinnati's Carl H. Lindner College of Business, graduating in 1976. His early professional years included roles in The Hartford’s Special Accounts Insurance Department and as an Auditor at Price Waterhouse
In 1978, Fred embarked on a distinguished 40-year career with Robert Half International, where he played a pivotal role in the company’s success. Starting as Division Director of Accountemps in Hartford, CT., he eventually rose to Senior Vice President for Professional Staffing Services in Chicago, IL. He was instrumental in establishing and leading the Salaried Professional Service, significantly expanding the firm’s operations and service offerings. He retired in 2018, leaving behind a lasting professional legacy.
Fred’s passions extended far beyond the workplace. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and later dedicated over a decade as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. Among his proudest achievements was leading five expeditions to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, instilling leadership and perseverance in young scouts. His commitment to conservation was evident through his work with the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, where he maintained local hiking trails. An avid fly fisherman, Fred was also a strong advocate for fishing conservation, serving as President of the Farmington River Anglers Association in Farmington, CT.
At the age of 33, Fred fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning his pilot’s license. He went on to own and fly his own single-engine Cessna, embracing the freedom of the skies and entertaining his family and friends with flights over Connecticut and New York.
In addition to his professional and outdoor pursuits, Fred was involved in financial governance, serving on the Supervisory Board of Visions Federal Credit Union—one of the largest credit unions in the Northeast—where he provided leadership in governance, guidance, and risk assessment.
Fred’s legacy is one of dedication, leadership, and service. He touched countless lives through his work, mentorship, and love for family and community. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
