Gerald Flanagan Obituary

Gerald Gage Flanagan, 94, of Smithville Flats, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford.  He was pre-deceased by his parents, Leila and Gage Flanagan; brother, Grayson; sisters, Marion and Lois; 2 infant granddaughters, Janice Eden and Rene Deidra Scott; also his long time companion, Doris Christian. Gerald is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Irv; sons and daughter-in-laws, Jeffery and Diane and Gary and Heather Flanagan; daughter and son-in-law,  Janice and George Medlar; grandchildren, Peter and Kathryn Flanagan, Mary and Craig Fitzgerald, Michael Scott and Caroline and David Cooper; great-grandchildren, Liam and Claire Flanagan, Mac, Joe and Luke Fitzgerald and Barrett Cooper. Gerald loved baseball. He pitched in high school, the Army, college and the local town team with his brother Grayson as catcher and cousin Clifford (Horsey) as well. Gerald and Clifford enlisted in the Army in 1944 together. After the service, he attended Triple Cities College and Morrisville College. He married Charlotte Jenot in 1949 and built their home in Smithville Flats where they raised three children. He worked as an electrician for Comfort Electric in Greene and retired from Raymond Corp. after nearly 40 years. His passion and enjoyment was building a family cottage at Echo Lake.  A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held at a later date in the spring. Arrangements are under direction of Root Funeral Home 23 N. Chenango Street, Greene New York 13778 and Condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to any Veteran’s organization of your choice in Gerald’s name.
