Message from David Sandway Reed
June 6, 2014 8:59 PM

I'm just now learning of David's passing. Very very sorry to hear the news. My mom Emilie Achen gave me the Sandway name (middle) when it was thought there would be no more Sandways (her mom Vera Sandway). So that's how I became David Sandway Reed in 1956. We named our son Alexander Achen Reed (born 1997) to honor and sustain my mother's maiden name as she did hers. Didn't really know David Sandway much but miss his mom and dad Martha and Charles and sister Tarma.

Words cannot express the great sadness I have in my heart at this time. I just found out this morning. David was so much more than a medical specialist, he was a true caring friend to each and every patient as well as the entire community. He always had a joke or cute story to make me forget about feeling awful. His incredible wealth of knowledge produced a comfort in my mind that I was in the best hands.
He shared so many stories about his family and was so proud of his sons accomplishments in school and scouts to name just a few. Laurie he always spoke of you highly. Although his time here on this earth was definitely too short he touched more lives/hearts than many do in 80+ years and please know God is being flooded with prayers for all of you to have strength to get through each day and carry on.

I am so saddened by this news.  I was expecting to see his happy face and have one of our informative talks at my upcoming appointment.  He was my absolute favorite medical practitioner...and I've been through many in different cities in my life.  He always bragged about his family, and rightly so.  I cannot imagine him gone.  But never forgotten.  Rest in peace, Dave.

To The Sandway Family~Having recently learned of the loss of your loved one, I would like to offer my condolences. During this very difficult time I would like to share with you, the hope promised in the Bible, the hope of the resurrection. Jesus stated at John 5:28,29 " The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his [Jesus] voice and come out." And at Revelation 21:3,4 it states that will be a time when "death will be no more." Last month I lost two members of my family, unexpectedly, and I understand the grief and sorrow that you and your family are feeling at this time. Those scriptures have brought comfort to me and my family, and I hope it does the same for your family. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

So sorry we cannot be sharing the Memorial Service with David's family today, but we send our heartfelt sympathy, thoughts and prayers as you all face this terrible loss.

David's outgoing, compassionate personality really touched us these past few years as we witnessed the concern, care and commitment he lovingly bestowed upon his mother, Martha, during her difficult illness.  His strength, and thoughtfulness reached out to all of us after her passing just a few months ago.  Even as he mourned, he was able to comfort those around him.  An extraordinary man, his presence and compassion for others will be greatly missed.

We pray that Laurie, Michael, Alexander, Charlie, Tarma and Kayla and family will find the strength needed to carry on.

In love and prayer,

Bruce and Karen McManus and family

To David's wife and family, and to Chuck, Tarma, and Kayla

It was a shock to read of David's passing, especially since it was a short time ago that I read of the death of David's mother Marti. It is bittersweet to learn of the man that David became--a life gone much too soon. The world has lost two GOOD people. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

So very saddened by this tragic, premature loss of a wonderful man.  My sincere condolences to all of David's family, and wishing them peace at this difficult time.
He was my trusted medical provider for many years, whose advice was always sound, never autocratic, and always open minded with a listening ear. Rarely do you find someone with such an honest, caring attitude, genuine dedication to their practice, all tempered with warmth and a humorous attitude.
He never hesitated to mention his family in casual conversation, and always spoke of his wife and sons with great pride.
All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,
Elisabeth Archer LPN

Although I only had the pleasure of working with David a short time at the USH cite in Green.  I instantly could see a natural gift from him. He was able to put people at ease, be professional, and bring laughter to all. My heart hurts for you and your family.  David will truly be missed for his special talents, his humor and for the passion that came from his soul to inspire and make a difference.  May God hold you during this difficult time. Dave and I were tentmates at the National Scout Jamboree this year. He was so easy to get to know and so dedicated to being sure his son was having the best experience possible at the Jamboree.  It was very obvious that he was a caring dad, husband, nurse practitioner and Scouter.  I'm shocked to learn of his loss but I hope his family is able to take solace in the fact that he touched so many lives in a positive way.

I have hard a hard time putting any words or thoughts together about this tragedy. I could spend far more words than what will be allotted talking about my friend David.

However, my thoughts are with Laurie, Michael, and Alex for despite all the well wishes, condolences, and thoughts of Dave, You three have the hardest burden; you will miss him most of all: My condolences.

I have known David for most of his life (and mine). We attended Primary school together, he left and came back. We attended High School and Clarkson University together. As one of our friends reminded me we WERE the Musketeers. He stood up for me at my wedding ( the first one :) ) He was one of my closest and trusted friends.

In the end, Dave and I were each the brothers we never had. I will always miss his boundless energy and his boundless enthusiasm. It was infectious! He will be forever in my heart! Until we meet again!

I am so very sorry about Dr. Sandways passing. He was my Dr. when he was in Nowich. I was having surgery and was very worried about it. He talked to me and listened to my fears. He did what he was called to do--he helped others. God be with your family at this time.

Dave Sandway was my downhill skiing, waterskiing and tubing partner during the 1980s and 1990s. Dave was always eager and ready to go waterskiing at 6:00 a.m. when my sisters and I would pick him up by boat at his parents' dock on Sodus Bay, whether it was in April or December, raining or snowing. Dave knew how to have fun, make people smile and laugh and was dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of everyone he came across. In 1982, Dave worked at Brantling Ski Slopes at the lift line where he was always making skiers smile and laugh as they were getting on or off the lift. David was extremely bright, earning his engineering degree at Clarkson, changing his career path and then obtaining his nursing degree after being called to the medical field. Dave was always determined, positive and put smiles on everyone's face with his sense of humor and laugh. He was always there to help anyone in need and made everybody feel good and welcomed. I am honored to have had David as my friend and I appreciate the positive impact he made on so many. Thank you David. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Sandway family during this difficult time.

I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of Dave. He was an amazing doctor in a nurse perspective. He helped me overcome a lot in the last year. He encouraged me to go back to school after I lost my dad. I will never forget his sense of humor. He was a good natured person & he cared so much for his patients that saw him. He talked highly about his family and Boy Scouts. He never masked any sickness or how to treat ADHD. May god watch over his boys and Laurie during this time of sorrow. God too him from us too soon, but he was called home and gained his angel wings. He will be forever missed by our whole community, his family, The Boy Scout Troop #162, and UHS Primary Care & Lourdes.
